Doll socks and stockings pattern

Please note: This pattern has a page on Ravelry.

Ninny was complaining this winter that Rosie’s “feet are soooooo cold!” So I decided to make Rosie (and her brother Heddy) something to warm up those cold tootsies (and help Ninny feel a bit better about taking Rosie out for a walk).

The following are basic stockinette stockings and socks made to fit 16″ Waldorf dolls. Handmade dolls may differ slightly in size, so it’s worth periodically checking the fit on your doll’s legs to make sure it’s fitting.

Glossary of terms:

  • bo: bind/cast off
  • CO: cast on
  • inc: knit into front and back of stitch to increase
  • k: knit
  • k2tog: knit 2 stitches together
  • p: purl
  • p2tog: purl 2 stitches together
  • rib: k1, p1 (single rib)
  • skpo: slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over
  • sl: slip
  • stst: k right side, p wrong side (stockinette stitch)
You will need:

Stockings

(in round)
1. co 34st and place marker.
2. Rib 4 rows
3. k1, inc 1, k17, inc 1, k16 (36st)
4. knit rows to top of instep (about 40 rows)
5. k1, k2tog, k16, k2tog, k15 (34st)
6. k18, turn, st-st (starting with p) 7 rows on these stitches (end with purl row)
7. k13, turn
8. sl1, p6, p2tog
9. sl1, k6, skpo
10. repeat rows 8 and 9 until 8 stitches are left on needle.
11. break yarn off, place marker and starting at end of instep pick up 7 down edge, 8 across instep, 7 up edge and 16 across top of instep (38 stitches spaced evenly on dpns).

Continuing in the round
12. skpo, k15, K2tog, skpo, k15, k2tog (34st)
13. skpo, k13, k2tog, skpo, k13, k2tog (30st)
14. knit 6 rows
15. skpo, k11, k2tog, skpo, k11, k2tog (26st)
16. skpo, k9, k2tog, skpo, k9, k2tog (22st)
17. skpo, k7, k2tog, skpo, k7, k2tog (18st)
18. arrange remaining stitches equally on 2 dpns, push the stocking between to turn inside out, then transfer the stitches onto 1 needle but taking stitches off each needle in turn (1 off needle a, then 1 off needle b, etc.)
19. p2tog, p2tog, bo, continue in this way until all stitches are bound off. Weave end in, turn stocking right side, make it a matching stocking.

Ankle Socks

(in round)

As stockings, but don’t increase after ribbed to 36 stitches, just keep on 34 and knit any number of rows you need for ankle socks (probably need atleast 12) before you follow the stocking pattern from line 6.

Knee Highs

(in round)

I haven’t tried these yet, but I suggest you just make the Stocking pattern shorter by knitting less rows. You need the additional stitches cast on as the legs are likely a little thicker still at the knee.
